In 2005, the Geological Society of New Zealand's (GSNZ) Annual Conference is to be held in Kaikoura, and will celebrate the 50th Anniversary since the establishment of our Society at an inaugural meeting held there in 1955. The 2005 conference is being organised by the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Canterbury, and will be held from Monday 28 November to Thursday 1 December 2005.

The conference will be preceded by a selection of four one-day field trips on Monday 28th November, which will also serve to provide transport for participants from Christchurch and Picton to Kaikoura. A three-day NE Marlborough pre-conference field trip, commencing in Picton and ending in Kaikoura, is also planned. During the conference a number of half-day field trip options are planned, and we are also offering a selection of three one-day post-conference field trips for Friday 2nd December, which again serve as a return travel option to Christchurch for participants.

Conference Registration will commence at 5.00pm in the Kaikoura Memorial Hall on 28th November, in conjunction with the Icebreaker function. Registration will continue at 8.00am on the morning of Tuesday 29th November in the Memorial Hall. The formal welcome and opening ceremony will commence at 9.00am in the Hall, and will include a Powhiri to be held at the conference centre on the nearby Takahanga Marae at 10.00am. Information desks will be staffed during coffee and lunch breaks throughout the conference.

All correspondence relating to the technical programme and field trips should be sent to: GSNZ 50th Anniversary Conference Kaikoura 2005, c/o Department of Geological Sciences, University of Canterbury, Private Bag 4800, Christchurch; by Fax: (03) 364 2769 or by email to gsnz05_at_geol.canterbury.ac.nz (note - replace "_at_" with "@").

All accommodation and registration enquiries should be directed to the Conference Organiser (for full address and contact details please refer to the end of this circular, or see the enclosed Registration Form). Further information on the conference and copies of the Registration Form can also be downloaded from the GSNZ web site at http://www.gsnz.org.nz

Oral and Poster Papers

The scientific programme will include all aspects of the earth sciences. Relevance to New Zealand, Antarctica or the SW Pacific is desirable but not essential. We have selected two theme Symposia (see following), but the organizing committee is particularly keen to see that the final programme theme sessions will reflect both the breadth and excellence of NZ Geoscience research developed over the last 50 years. We are planning to include several plenary speakers during the conference, and concurrent sessions will run for the rest of each day. We request that Registrants limit their abstract submission to one paper (oral or poster). Registrants may be co-authors on additional abstracts, but not present them. Registrants wishing to submit and present more than one abstract may do so, with the proviso that the organizing committee reserve the right not to accept such additional papers offered in the event that the available programme slots are fully subscribed.

The 50th Anniversary Conference Special Theme Symposia are:

A: 50 Years on in New Zealand Geology
Convener: Malcolm Laird
This symposium is to showcase the history, developments and excellence of New Zealand Geoscience research since the establishment of the Geological Society of New Zealand in 1955. We invite papers that will broadly fit this theme.

B: Mountains to Abyss - The Active and Passive Margins of Eastern NZ
Conveners: Lionel Carter and Jarg Pettinga
In 2005 NZ's marine geological research programme also celebrates its establishment 50 years ago. This symposium is in recognition of this milestone, and provides an opportunity to highlight the advances and outstanding contributions over the last half Century. We have broadened the scope to reflect the interdisciplinary "Source to Sink" theme so appropriate in the NZ plate boundary context. In addition to several invited presentations we invite papers that complement this theme.

When submitting your abstract, please indicate on the registration form if you are submitting a presentation to either of the special theme Symposia. Other themes will be added later to reflect the range of papers submitted by participants or the requests of potential conveners.

Oral papers will be scheduled for 20 minute slots, 15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for discussion. As there will be concurrent sessions during much of the conference, changeover times will be synchronised. Lecture theatres will contain one data projector for PowerPoint presentations only. An overhead projector may be requested at the time of abstract submission, but only one screen will be available in each lecture room. Plenary speakers will be allocated some additional time for presentations, further details to be advised.

Poster Papers

Coordinator: Anekant Wandres
Posters on all aspects of earth science are invited, as well as those linked to the conference theme Symposia listed above. Each poster author will be asked to be present at their poster at a designated time to provide an opportunity for conference participants to ask questions and discuss research results with authors presenting the poster.

Those wishing to present posters are invited to contact the organising committee or consult the Society's web-site for detailed guidelines for posters before the registration deadline.

Abstracts

We will accept abstracts up to one page in length (using 12pt Times New Roman font) for all talks and posters, including plenary presentations (see formatting requirements below). Abstracts will be published in the conference Programme and Abstracts Volume (A4 size black and white reproduction) as a Geological Society of New Zealand Miscellaneous Publication. We request that authors limit the number of offered papers to one, if more than one abstract for either oral or poster presentations is offered by a presenting author we will only be able to accept these if there remain available slots in the programme. Please ensure that your abstract is reviewed internally or by co-authors prior to submission. Check the formatting. Only abstracts from bona fide registrants will be published in the programme and abstracts volume. All abstracts will be reviewed prior to acceptance.

We ask that abstracts are sent by email as an attachment (preferably in Microsoft Word format; plain text if not) to gsnz05_at_geol.canterbury.ac.nz with abstract, whether it's a talk, poster, and/or student paper in the email subject line eg: abstract - talk - student. Formatting for abstracts should be as follows:

  • Times New Roman 12pt font, single line spacing throughout. Title bold capitals, authors bold lowercase; presenting author underlined. All other text plain.
  • title, names and addresses centred; rest of abstract justified flush left and right.
  • authors' names and each address to fit on one line (omit "New Zealand" if necessary).
  • add presenting author's email address on a new line after the last author
  • blank line after title, before the text body and between paragraphs.
  • no page numbers, paragraph indents or footnotes.
  • white-background diagrams are fine, but use patterns rather than grey shades. Please note figures will be reduced to 50% size in the final abstract volume 2-column layout, and authors submitting figures will need to reduce text accordingly.
  • we reserve the right to edit or reject abstracts not conforming to the above.

All abstracts must be with the conference organizing committee by Friday 16 September. Indicate on the Registration form and in your email subject line whether you prefer your presentation to be made as a talk or poster. We will try to accommodate your preference; and will confirm in advance of the conference what sort of presentation you have been allocated.

Abstracts must be submitted electronically by email to:

Accommodation

The society has pre-booked a range of motel ($55/person), backpacker/cabin ($30) accommodation in Kaikoura, close to the conference venue, and beds will be allocated on a "first come-first served basis". Delegates are advised that this is "back to the old days" in more ways than one. The beds might range from a double in their own room, to twin (two in a room) or even in the living room - it is luck of the draw. If you wish to take advantage of our pre-booked accommodation and reserve a bed as part of your conference registration we will allocate you to a bed in a unit/room in order to maximise available unit/room occupancy. If you wish to make arrangements to share a room/unit with one or more named individuals we ask that each registrant involved please indicate this on their respective registration forms, and forward the registration details together in the same envelope. This will significantly assist us in trying to meet your accommodation requirements.

Those not interested in sharing a room or motel unit are asked to make their own accommodation arrangements. The Kaikoura Information Centre (ph. 03-319 5641 or email info_at_kaikoura.co.nz) may be able to provide further assistance. Anyone registering late (after 16 September 2005) can not be guaranteed accommodation.

Participants are advised that accommodation in Kaikoura is often fully booked by tour groups, and in order to secure a bed we will need your confirmed requirements with full payment by 16TH SEPTEMBER - Society pre-bookings must be released after that date.

Accompanying Persons

Please note that there is no crèche or accompanying persons programme for this conference, although there is a wide range of things to do in the neighbourhood, including whale watching, diving with dolphins, swimming with seals, "albatross encounters", tramping, horse-riding, four-wheeler safaris, golf, fishing charters, white-water rafting, sky-diving, crayfish eating, sea kayaking, vineyard visits, "surf-board adventures", and art trails. Brochure and booking for all of these are available at the Information Centre. In addition, accompanying persons are welcome on fieldtrips and at social events, provided places are booked and paid for on the registration form. A $5.00 processing fee will apply.

Discounted Registration Fee

To qualify for the discounted registration fee, your registration form and payment must be received no later than 16 September. Note that REGISTRATIONS AFTER 16th SEPTEMBER ARE $50 MORE EXPENSIVE. This represents a realistic costing of the additional work required for late registration. A hard copy of the Registration Form is included with the July GSNZ Newsletter. Registration by email or Fax is also acceptable, a digital copy of the Registration Form can also be downloaded from the GSNZ website in doc or pdf format. All digital Abstracts must be received on or prior to the 16 September. Telephone registrations will not be accepted.

All those registering will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of registration within two weeks. The allocation of accommodation will be advised separately at a later date, and after the 16 September discount registration deadline. A receipt will be forwarded with your confirmation after both registration AND payment have been processed.. Our Policy on Refunds and Cancellations is:

Cancelled before: Refund of:

1 November 80%
15 November 50%

Pre-conference field trips

We are offering a three-day Pre-conference field trip to Eastern Marlborough, starting from Picton on Saturday 26th November. Participants are asked to make their own arrangements for ferry bookings and meet the field trip transport outside the Interislander Ferry terminal in Picton at 12.30pm (provisional at this time). Further details regarding trip arrangements will be finalised after the registration deadline of 16th September.

Three one-day field trips and one half-day trip are offered on Monday 28 November. These trips will serve to transport participants to Kaikoura. Lunch will be provided for participants on the full-day trips from Christchurch and is included in the cost. Field excursion guidebooks will be provided for all field trip participants. All participants should be prepared for weather ranging from warm sunny days to cold windy and/or rainy days.

While we will endeavour to cater for all who indicate they wish to participate on the field trips, it is likely that the number of seats will be limited after the conference registration deadline of 16th September. Space is limited, and the key to securing travel to Kaikoura is to book early. Excursions/transport may be cancelled if there is insufficient interest. In the case of cancelled trips there may be alternative arrangements available for travel to Kaikoura. Those wishing to use public transport will need to make their own arrangements. There are a number of small tour operators using mini-vans and buses from Christchurch and Picton, and a daily train service from Christchurch (am) and Picton (pm) travels via Kaikoura.

Pre-conference Three-day Trip 1: Cretaceous-Paleogene Stratigraphy of Eastern Marlborough: Opening a South Pacific Window on a Greenhouse Earth
Leaders: Chris Hollis, Percy Strong, Malcolm Laird and James Crampton
Duration: 2.5 days, Saturday Nov 26 to Monday Nov 28
Route: Wellington/Picton (arrange own ferry travel) - Ward - Kaikoura (4WD vans)

This excursion will showcase the spectacular upper Cretaceous to middle Eocene passive margin, fining-upwards succession of eastern Marlborough. We will examine how pre-existing topography, local tectonics, global climatic changes and extreme events are reflected in the local stratigraphy. At Ward Beach and surrounding area we will view slumps, mass flow deposits and channelling within the upper Cretaceous siliclastic Whangai Formation. At Woodside Creek, Flaxbourne River and Chancet Rocks we will view the best on-land Southern Hemisphere records of the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary event and review the local evidence for asteroid impact, mass extinction, collapse of the ocean ecosystem and long-term climate change. At Mead Stream, a 650 m thick section through pelagic facies of the Mead Hill Formation offers a window into the evolution of the South Pacific Ocean from latest Cretaceous to middle Eocene times, from chert-rich episodes of cooling in the Cretaceous and early Paleocene to marl-rich episodes of extreme global warming in the early and middle Eocene, including a well-delineated record of the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum. If time allows, we will also examine Cretaceous fossiliferous strata in Coverham area, the Great Marlborough Conglomerate and Clarence Fault (Mead Stream, Deadman Stream), the upper Cretaceous transition from siliciclastic to pelagic depositions (Mororimu Stream) and correlative proximal facies of the Mead Stream succession at Kaikoura.

Cost: $230 (includes two nights accommodation, continental breakfasts and boxed lunches, dinners are extra). Limited to 20 participants).

Pre-conference Day Trip 2: Conway Coast and Hawkeswood Range Active Tectonics and Basin Facies Analysis.
Leaders: Kari Bassett and Tim McConnico

The east side of the Hawkeswood Range preserves a terrestrial to marine sedimentary succession that is coeval with, and straddles an active, complex imbricate thrust fault zone. Participants on this field trip will see a series of uplifted and tectonically deformed alluvial fan deposits along the Conway Coast, on the east flank of the Hawkeswood Range, that link to a well-preserved, marine Gilbert-style deltaic sequence. Within the deltaic sequence exist fantastic examples of fan delta deposits and processes including slumping and unique pebble imbrication patterns. Along the way participants will also see an ancient 8000 yr old podocarp forest and unlock its connection to the fan delta and active tectonics of the region.

This trip will be timed to meet incoming participants at Christchurch airport on Monday 28th November, departing from the airport at between 9-10 am. Final details to be arranged.

Cost: $40.00 (includes boxed lunch)

Pre-conference Day Trips 3A and 3B: Structure, Stratigraphy and Active Tectonics of Inland North Canterbury
Leaders: Joc Campbell, Jarg Pettinga and John Bradshaw

Field trip 3A will take participants along the middle Waipara River through Culverden basin, via the inland Kaikoura Road along the Hope Fault to Kaikoura. Trip A will focus on several overview stops covering aspects of active tectonics and structural geomorphology, including the Boby's Creek Fault near Mt Grey, the Hawarden anticline in SW Culverden Basin, and the Hope Fault at Mt Lyford village, and brief roadside stops at Charwell and/or Greenburn Stream (the latter two localities will be covered in more detail on the half-day mid conference trip 7).

Field trip 3B will include a series of stops focussed on the Cretaceous Tertiary succession in the Middle Waipara River Gorge, and overview stops along the Hope Fault at Mt Lyford village, Charwell and/or Greenburn Stream.

This trip will be timed to meet incoming participants at Christchurch airport on Monday 28th November, departing from the airport at between 9-10 am. Final details to be arranged.

Cost: $40.00 (includes boxed lunch)

Pre-conference Half-Day Trip 4: Aspects of East Marlborough Geology
Leaders: Russ van Dissen, Andy Nicol and Tim Little

In this field trip we will examine aspects of the geology of eastern Marlborough, including; faults and Oligocene sedimentary rocks at Picton, the Wairau and Awatere faults, salt production at Lake Grassmere and active tectonics along the Kekerengu coast.

The trip will be timed to depart from outside the Interislander Ferry Passenger Terminal in Picton at about 1.00pm on Monday 28th November, after the arrival of the morning sailing from Wellington, and will reach Kaikoura at about 5.00pm. Final details to be arranged.

Cost: (Own transport $10; Conference transport $20)

Mid-conference field trips: (Wed. 8.30am to 12.30pm)

Mid-conference Half-Day Trip 5: Structure, Stratigraphy and Quaternary Geology of Kaikoura Peninsula
Trip 5A Leaders: Jocelyn Campbell, Phil Tonkin and John Bradshaw

Beginning with the spectacular folding in the Tertiary limestones exposed on the shore platform along the eastern coastline, there will be plenty of photo opportunities for both rocks and seals. The overprinting and relationship of these small scale structures to the larger scale folding and faulting will be discussed. Questions relating to ongoing deformation on these structures and the larger picture of the tectonic setting will be raised, as the trip continues up the walkway onto the spectacular flight of uplifted and tilted Late Quaternary marine terraces. Weather permitting, the cliff top provides great views of the Seaward Kaikoura Range and the coastal structures.

Trip 5B Leaders: Malcolm Laird, Greg Browne and Brad Field

This fieldtrip will examine the latest Cretaceous/Tertiary sedimentary succession at South Bay on the Peninsula. The sequence provides a record of geological history from the onset of transgression and regional deepening accompanying sea-floor spreading beginning at ~85Ma, through a tectonic/erosional event in the middle Oligocene (Marshall Unconformity), into overlying Miocene deposits generated during the early stages of the Kaikoura Orogeny. Time permitting a stop at the latest Cretaceous succession exposed on the north side of the Peninsula will also be included.

Cost $10.00

Mid-conference Half-Day Trip 6: Mt Fyffe Active Tectonics and Hazards
Leaders: Tim Davies, Bill Bull and Russ Van Dissen

Planned field stops follow the wide zone of ground deformation associated with the Hope Fault, along the Mt Fyffe rangefront between Kowhai and Hapuku Rivers. Range-front landforms developed in response to the interactive tectonic and fluvial processes, and history of development of the Kowhai River, Waimangarara River, Harnetts Creek and Hapuku River fans will be examined. The implications for development and hazard management of the Kaikoura Plains and township are also considered.

Cost $15.00

Mid-conference Half-Day Trip 7: Structural Geomorphology and Paleoseismicity of the Hope Fault.
Leaders: Jarg Pettinga, Dyk Eusden, and Rob Langridge

Our first stop will be on Conway Downs Station along the main range-front trace of the transpressional Hope Fault near Charwell, where the fault zone setting coincides with a ~1000m wide releasing step-over zone. The spatial and temporal changes in the structural geometry and style of deformation of this fault zone are interpreted to reflect the role of topographic loading in adjusting the fault zone break-out, slip transfer and slip-partitioning along the range-front, and is recorded by the world-class tectonic geomorphic landforms there. From this locality we will also be able to overview the superb sequence of late Quaternary displaced tectonic and climatic river terraces, and discuss how these may be dated, and used to constrain long-term uplift and right-lateral offset rates.

Stop Two will be at Greenburn Stream to observe a spectacular late Holocene shutter ridge formed by the main trace of the Hope Fault. Fault offset has ponded an alluvial fan succession, and provided what is to date the best constraints on paleoseismicity and slip rate for the NE Hope Fault.

Cost $15.00

Post-conference field trips

Leaving Kaikoura on Friday 2 December at 8.30 am.

Note: Spaces are limited on these trips. Students especially are encouraged to participate.

Post-conference Field Trip 8: Following in McKay's Footsteps - Iconic Cretaceous and Neogene Sequences, Haumuri Bluff.
Leaders: Greg Browne, Ian Speden and Brad Field

Few localities are as significant to the history of sedimentary geology in New Zealand as Haumuri Bluff, 20 km south of Kaikoura. The stratotype for our Haumurian and Piripauan stages, scene of infamous fossil collecting expeditions by Alexander McKay, and spectacular coastal scenery! The trip will examine Late Cretaceous stratigraphy in the railway cutting and north side of the bluff, Amuri Limestone (type section), the Marshall Unconformity, and Neogene siltstones. Travel will be by 4WD vehicles. Due to limited numbers, an early booking is essential. Return travel to Chch/Picton to be arranged. Cost: $50.00 (includes boxed Lunch)(Limited to min. 10, max. 20 persons)

Post-conference Day Trip 9: Conway Coast and Hawkeswood Range Active Tectonics and Basin Facies Analysis. (Note this is an extended version of pre-conference field trip 2)
Leaders: Kari Bassett and Tim McConnico

The east side of the Hawkeswood Range preserves terrestrial to marine sedimentary succession that is coeval with, and straddle an active, complex imbricate thrust fault zone. Participants on this field trip will see a series of uplifted and tectonically deformed alluvial fan deposits along the Conway Coast, on the east flank of the Hawkeswood Range, that link to a well-preserved, marine Gilbert-style deltaic sequence. Within the deltaic sequence exist fantastic examples of fan delta deposits and processes including slumping and unique imbrication patterns. Along the way participants will also see an ancient 8000 yr old podocarp forest and unlock its connection to the fan delta and active tectonics of the region. This trip will be timed to return participants to Christchurch airport and city at ~5.00pm. Final details to be arranged.

Cost: $40.00 (includes boxed lunch)

Post-conference Day Trip 10: Active Tectonics and Structural Geomorphology of Inland North Canterbury
Leaders: Joc Campbell and Jarg Pettinga

This trip will take participants from Kaikoura to Christchurch via the inland Kaikoura road, Culverden basin and Weka Pass, Waipara, to Christchurch Airport and city ~5.00pm. Stops planned will substantially differ from trip 3. The route will follow the Hope Fault from Kaikoura to Waiau, and we will make several stops to view the spectacular tectonic geomorphology associated with the fault zone along the Seaward Kaikoura and Amuri range-front. The influence of transpressional faulting and associated topographic loading on the fault zone leads to the development of an extruded hanging-wall fault zone wedge, while complex fault arrays also evolve in the footwall. From Waiau the trip will continue south along the east margin of Culverden Basin and stops will include opportunities to view the zone of imbricate thrust faulting along the Lowry Peaks range-front, and the active tectonic evolution of the east margin of Culverden Basin at Leonard Mound, a thrust propagated anticlinal ridge. From here the trip will continue south via Weka Pass and an opportunity to take in the mid-and upper Tertiary successions, and then travel on to Christchurch.

This trip will be timed to return participants to Christchurch airport and city at ~5.00pm. Final details to be arranged. Cost: $40.00 (including boxed lunch)

Alternative Transport Options to and from Kaikoura
