  Where is Mt Mangere? 

Mt Mangere is located next to the Mangere Bridge in northern Manukau City (Map Reference of summit: NZMS260 R11/692711), within a public domain administered by the Manukau City Council. The domain can be accessed by vehicle from Domain Road (off Coronation Road), via a single-lane road leading to the sports fields and clubroom (see map below). Ample parking is available around the clubroom; additional parking is available just past the entrance to the domain, across the road from Memorial Hall (on Domain Road). Vehicle access is recommended, but there are also several pedestrian accesses from surrounding streets.
 

Toilets are available at the sports clubroom, but are often locked. While planning your trip to Mt Mangere, make sure that you contact the Parks Booking Officer, Manukau City Council (Ph. 263 7100) for keys to unlock the toilets should you require them. 

  Worksheets for Students 

The worksheet provided here has been compiled from material used on past field trips (mainly group tours) to Mt Mangere. The planned field trip has 8 stop points around the volcano (see route map above) from which various features can be seen. The worksheet contains a series of questions with answer spaces, and gives room for sketches. The last page of the worksheet has a route map similar to that presented above. The questions are designed to encourage students to think about the volcanic topography, processes involved in its formation, volcanic features in the surrounding landscape, and the reasons that our volcanic field has been so useful in helping us colonise the Auckland isthmus.

  Field Trip Tips 

Here are a few tips for your field trip to Mt Mangere: 

• Take warm clothes and a raincoat - the weather in Auckland changes quickly and the crater rim is very exposed to the wind. 

  Take sunscreen and a hat during summer. 

  Wear solid footwear with good cleated soles - wet ground in winter and dry grass in summer are both super slippery! 

  Plan your visit between the hours of 10am & 3pm for the best lighting. Shadows later in the day hide some of the features in the crater.
