GSNZ Branch event

The unique stratigraphy of Karioi Maunga (Waikato) - North Islands’ last unmapped stratovolcano

Dr Oliver McLeod presents the findings of his latest field survey on Karioi. This ancient volcano contains an extremely rare assemblage of lavas that originate from two distinct sources in the Earth’s mantle. The newly defined stratigraphy challenges the global understanding of magma formation and provides fresh insight into the origins of both subduction and intraplate style volcanism in North Island.

Copies of Oliver’s Pirongia Volcano Geological Map available for $30 cash only. Proceeds go towards the current Karioi Map Project.

6pm meet and greet followed by the presentation at 6.30pm
