Geology of the Pirongia Volcano, presented to Kiingi Tuheitia

Presentation of book and map by Oliver McLeod to Kiingi Tūheitia at the Pūrekireki Marae

On Friday 11 December GSNZ member Oliver McLeod presented his geological map and map book Geology of the Pirongia Volcano, Waikato to Kiingi Tūheitia.  The occasion was the unveiling of carvings at Mātakitaki Pā, near Pirongia, to commemorate the tragic events that occurred there in 1822.  The book was presented during lunch by Oliver as a gift from the Pūrekireki Marae.

Oliver’s geological mapping of the North Island’s largest basaltic volcano and unravelling of its volcanic history was a focus of his PhD research in the School of Science at the University of Waikato.  The book was launched by the Waikato Branch of the Geoscience Society of New Zealand at the Pirongia Heritage Centre on 18 November and further public talks by Oliver have been held in Kawhia, Hamilton, Raglan and Te Awamutu – an amazing outreach of around 450 people in its first month.

The book has been published by the Geoscience Society of New Zealand with generous sponsorship from the Pirongia and Te Awamutu ward committees of the Waipa District Council.
